Filling your home with your favorite holiday decorations is a great way to enjoy a little extra holiday cheer. Before you start putting up all of your holiday decorations, it is important to take the time to figure out what your well-constructed holiday wonderland means for your Chicago, IL homeowners insurance policy. Avoid these holiday décor blunders to help make the most of the season.
- When searching for a Christmas tree, make sure to get a fresh one. Fresh trees have sticky resin on the bottom and needles that do not snap when bent and are difficult to pull off the tree. When shaken, the tree should only drop a couple of needles. As an added bonus, a fresh tree is much less likely to catch fire.
- Hang non-toxic and unbreakable ornaments on the lowest portion of your Christmas tree to keep children and pets safe. Use ribbon to hang the ornaments on the tree instead of metal hooks, which can pose a choking hazard.
- When hanging your decorations, use a ladder that will extend at least three feet over your roofline or whatever area you are working with. Place the ladder on firm, level ground and use levelers if you are on an incline. Your ladder should be able to hold your weight as well as the weight of any decorations that you are putting up.
- Only use lights that have passed a safety test conducted by Underwriters Lab or another well-known and established testing facility. Lights that have been tested for safety will be marked with a UL label. Lights that have a red label can be used both inside and out while green labels mean the lights are only tested for indoor use.
